A Journey Through Time: The Legacy of the Mediterranean School of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Nestled in the picturesque region of Cison di Valmarino, the Mediterranean School of Epidemiology and Biostatistics has been a beacon of learning and growth for researchers worldwide. Since its inception in the spring of 1997, this summer school has not only provided academic enrichment but also fostered lifelong friendships and unforgettable experiences.

The Early Years: Founded as a joint effort between the Harvard School of Public Health (now the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health) in Boston and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) in Milano, the school began with a modest vision. The first session, held in the summer of 1997 in Sicily at Fontane Bianche, welcomed students for three weeks of intensive courses in epidemiology and biostatistics. These courses, offered in both Italian and English, aimed to bring together researchers with common interests to explore modern methods in these disciplines.

Growth and Expansion: After six successful years, the partnership saw a significant change. The Karolinska Institutet of Stockholm replaced CNR, and with support from the Regione del Veneto, the school moved to its current location at CastelBrando in Cison di Valmarino. This move marked a new chapter of growth and expansion, allowing the school to enhance its curriculum and facilities.

Innovative Programs and Initiatives: Innovation has been at the core of the school’s philosophy. The emphasis on modern numerical thinking to advance research in the health sciences has kept pace with breakthroughs in computing science to improve our skills. The school continues to attract a teaching staff of premier scholars from Harvard, the Karolinska, and numerous other institutions across Europe, adding to the quality and diversity of the educational experience.

Memorable Moments: Throughout its history, the Summer School has been the backdrop for countless memorable moments. From inspiring guest lectures by renowned figures to the annual events where students showcase their talents, the school has created a rich tapestry of experiences. Alumni often reminisce about their time here, sharing stories of late-night study sessions, impromptu cultural festivals, and the lifelong friendships they formed.

Looking Ahead: As the Summer School looks to the future, it remains committed to its founding principles of excellence, inclusivity, and innovation. Plans for the coming years include introducing new interdisciplinary courses, and strengthening partnerships with institutions worldwide. The goal is to continue providing a transformative educational experience that equips students with the skills and knowledge to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Conclusion: The history of the Summer School is a testament to the power of education and community. From its humble beginnings to its current status, it has touched the lives of thousands of students. As we celebrate its legacy, we look forward to the many more chapters that will be written in the years to come.
